Tue, 9 May 2023 12:30 – 14:00 BST Online

This event marks the first in a new series on mentoring, organized and led by RGS Research Groups. Over the coming year, we’ll be hosting a series of online events which aim to provide new approaches to mentoring.  The impetus for this mentoring series arises from discussions between the Society’s Research Groups on the need for mentoring but also awareness of some of the challenges of mentoring. We hope in these events to create spaces in which some of the power dynamics that can arise from mentoring can be challenged and discussed.

These events are open to all career stages and geographers across sub and inter disciplinary boundaries.

We will facilitate opportunities for ‘reverse mentoring’ in which there will be space for more early career colleagues to advise more senior colleagues. These events will be interactive and informal and will provide opportunities for ‘spot mentoring’ (through breakout rooms and small group discussions) and discussion on a number of key topics, including:

  • What is mentoring and how to mentor
  • What makes a good mentor and mentee
  • Promotion
  • How to make your CV and research profile coherent
  • How to move into a different research area
  • And more

In this first online event, organized by the Political Geography Research Group, we’ll be launching the series with a focus on what good mentoring looks like, and different mentorship approaches. We’ll have introductory talks from invited speakers, followed by the opportunity for discussion in smaller breakout groups. These events will be online and are open to geographers based globally and at all career stages. Please direct any questions to rhed@rgs.org.
