The Political Geography Research Group (PolGRG) of the Royal Geographical Society will be holding its AGM online on the 5th September from 12.30-2pm (BST). Everyone is very welcome to attend and the AGM is an opportunity to review activities and achievements of the group over the past year but also a chance to plan activities for next year, suggestions for events, and to discuss how the research group is run.

Register in advance for the AGM using this link:

PolGRG brings together geographers and others interested in a wide variety of issues connected with relationships between space and power. PolGRG aims to promote research, to provide a forum, to create opportunities for early career scholars in the field and to support the teaching of political geography at universities in the UK.

This year we have a lot of committee roles available, therefore it is the perfect time to get involved. The committee positions we have available are:

Chair (1 position, 3 years): Leads the Research Group, helping to set its agenda and supporting other committee members in their roles. They may also be asked to respond to consultations by the Society on behalf of the group.

Vice-Chair (1 position, 3 years): Supports the chair and other committee members.

Secretary (1 position, 3 years): Supports the administrative work of the group, including minuting the group’s AGM and other meetings, liaising with new members, and organising the PolGRG book prize.

Treasurer (1 position, 3 years): Manages the research group finances.

Postgraduate representative (2 positions, 1 year): Promotes and supports postgraduate interests and needs to the wider Research Group and maintains connection with wider postgraduate community through the Postgraduate Forum.

Early career representative (1 position, 1 year): Promotes and supports early career interests and needs to the wider Research Group.

Ordinary Member (1 position, 3 years): This role is flexible and the candidate can get involved in the activities of the research group where needed. Previous post holders have helped organise the undergraduate dissertation prize and PolGRG workshops.

Each of these positions has a lot of flexibility and tasks are always shared amongst the committee.

Nominations are open until Friday 1st September 2023. If more than one person is nominated for a role, a vote will be held during the AGM.

If you would like to nominate yourself for a position please email Olivia Mason (olivia.mason2@newcastle.ac.uk) and Dan Hammett (D.Hammett@sheffield.ac.uk). We are both very happy to discuss any of the positions informally for anyone interested.

During the RGS-IBG Annual Conference we will also be holding a PolGRG informal lunchtime gathering on Friday 1st September 2023 at 13.10 (room details in the conference programme) and this is also an opportunity to meet the current committee and ask any questions.

Please do not hesitate to email us if you have any questions about the roles.

Hope to see many of you at the AGM and/or RGS-IBG annual conference!

Warm wishes,

Olivia (on behalf of the PolGRG committee)
