We’re delighted to host the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) with IBG’s next online seminar in the series on mentoring on 4th December 2024, 2-3pm GMT. Sign up here.

The online seminar aims to provide early-career scholars and postgraduate students with valuable insights and guidance regarding different academic career pathways and how to navigate the current job market. In the context of the neoliberalisation of higher education, where pressures around productivity, funding, and job security are escalating, this event will highlight the importance of offering support, collaboration, and mentorship.

In this session, we will hear from two political geographers, Professor Nick Clarke and Dr Hannah Sender, about their experiences on job panels and applying for fellowships and grants. Hannah will speak about her experience in successfully applying for an ESRC Postdoctoral Grant and Leverhulme Fellowship. Nick will offer insights from his experience on job panels for lectureship and teaching positions. In breakout rooms, there will then be smaller and more tailed discussions and opportunities for support – as part of your sign-up you can indicate which topic you are most interested in.

The intention is that this event provides attendees with strategies for career development in a challenging job market.
