The Political Geography Research Group (PolGRG) of the Royal Geographical Society will be holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM) online on Monday, 1 September, 11.00am BST. Everyone is very welcome to attend! The AGM is an opportunity to review activities and achievements of the group over the past year, and it is a chance to plan activities for next year, suggestions for events, and to discuss how the research group is run.
Register in advance for the AGM using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/6fwaySLmT4aAr9qIf_kMfw
PolGRG brings together geographers and others interested in a wide variety of issues connected with relationships between space and power. PolGRG aims to promote research, to provide a forum, to create opportunities for early career scholars in the field, and to support the teaching of political geography at universities in the UK.
Committee members meet online several times a year. Joining the committee provides opportunities to organise events, grow your network, engage in critical conversations about political geography, and work with a friendly group of committee members.
This year we have a few committee roles available – these are mostly aimed at early career academics and postgraduates so perfect opportunities for ECAs to get involved.
Postgraduate representative (2 positions, 1 year): Promotes and supports postgraduate interests and needs to the wider Research Group, and maintains connection with wider RGS postgraduate community through the Postgraduate Forum.
Early career representative (1 position, 1 year): Promotes and supports early career interests and needs to the wider Research Group.
Communications Officer (1 position, 1 year maternity cover): Manages the social media pages and website for the Research Group.
Each of these positions has a lot of flexibility and tasks are always shared among the committee. We will support a handover for all the positions too to ensure you’ve got lots of support.
Nominations are open until Friday 29th August 2025. If more than one person is nominated for a role, a vote will be held during the AGM.
If you would like to nominate yourself for a position please email Olivia Mason (olivia.mason2@newcastle.ac.uk) and Shawn Bodden (shawn.bodden@ed.ac.uk). We are both very happy to discuss any of the positions informally with anyone interested.
During the RGS-IBG Annual Conference in Birmingham we will also be holding a PolGRG informal lunchtime gathering on Friday 29th August 2025 13:10-14:25 (room details in the conference programme); this is also an opportunity to meet the current committee, chat and meet with other political geographers in a friendly environment, and ask any questions.
Again, please do not hesitate to get in touch via email if you have any questions about the roles!
